We celebrate the shift from longer days to longer nights. It’s wonderful time of year to cultivate balance – mentally, emotionally and physically.
As the season changes, leaves fall and Autumn draws gradually in, we look at how we can stay rooted and connected to nature and our hearts. Enjoy observing the leaves as they change colour and shape, feel the glorious crisp air as you take deeper inhales and exhales. Even sit for a while and observe the mind, is it in the past or future, or maybe the present moment. Remember that just as the seasons change, everything in life is constantly moving too, flowing, evolving with us and around us. Try to resist grasping for things that you are perhaps looking for, know that these things will flow when the moment is right, look to the trees just as their leaves know it’s ok to let go and that they will bloom and flourish again after Autumn and winters rest.
Leave the familiar for a while, let your senses stretch out just as the new seasons do!
In your yoga practice look to experiences that are warming and grounding. Standing forward bends, seated forward bends and twists. Side angle pose, Warrior II, triangle, eagle or tree. Understand your bodies natural needs right now and how it will surrender to the organic ebb and flow of the environment but adding a little tweaking along the way to compliment and enhance! Think about food, cleanse and heal through the season, soothing the nerves and digestion as our diets change from summer foods to autumn and winter. Eat plenty of root vegetables, whole grains and oats, beans and chickpeas, lentils, soy beans. Think about warming herbs and spices of cloves, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon, mmmmmm lovely!
Its really quite nice to also enjoy all the thoughts that Autumn evokes like sweaters, boots, snuggling and cuddling up, sitting around a warm fire, candles, crisp air, hot chocolate, the sounds and smells of a walk in the forest, kicking up the piles of leaves!!
Few sights are more beautiful than trees with brilliant foliage, bold reds, yellows, oranges and browns. So colourful. Try to notice that Autumn is more the season of the soul and be thankful we live in a world where there are Octobers! xx
I will post a compilation of photos from summers practice this year in another post over the next few days. You might like to know that on Thursday December 19th I will be hosting a relaxation evening. More details to follow. Places will be limited.
For now my dear friends……a little smile, breathe steady and go slowly.
Love Susan xx
